Eight faculty members took advantage of an excellent opportunity offered by the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences: in mid-May they completed the department's intensive four-month grant writing class. Their completion was marked by a mock grant review session of their drafted proposals.
The course was taught and spearheaded by faculty member June Taylor, PhD, a veteran reviewer, especially for NIH proposals. It was modeled on a course taught at the University of Washington, and was coordinated in large part by Amy Sikalis. Several other people helped with instruction over the 13-week period, including Michael Mozdy (writing, argument construction), Nan Hu, PhD (statistics), Brian Chapman, PhD, and John Roberts, PhD (data management), and Amy Sikalis (grant anatomy and preparation). Students focused on the structure and needs of NIH grant proposals, although they worked on proposals to the funding body of their choice. Mentors helped each student throughout.
Their capstone work was to present their final proposals to a mock review committee of two faculty members, who rated the proposals as if on an NIH review committee and then provided feedback and discussion to the students. Below are the four who finished in the first ever grant writing course cohort by participating in the mock reviews:
Christopher Dillon, PhD.
"Skin Cooling During Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Treatments of Superficial Targets"
Mentor: Allison Payne, PhD. Reviewers: Ed DiBella, PhD and Frederic Noo, PhD.
EK Jeong, PhD.
"Quantitative evaluation of myelin damage in cervical spinal cord"
Mentor: June Taylor, PhD. Reviewers: Dennis Parker, PhD and Frederic Noo, PhD.
Megan Mills, MD.
"Practice Makes Perfect: Teaching Imaging Guided Musculoskeletal Hip Procedures Utilizing a Shareable 3D Printed Simulator"
Mentor: Chris Hanrahan, MD, PhD. Reviewers: Ed DiBella, PhD, and Allison Payne, PhD.
Miriam Peckham, MD.
"Noncontrast characterization of cerebrovascular insufficiency before and after reperfusion therapy using perfusion weighted IVIM"
Mentors: Karen Salzman, MD and Scott McNally, MD, PhD. Reviewers: Jeff Anderson, MD, PhD and Dennis Parker, PhD.
Students completing course without submitting proposals for mock review:
Yoshimi Anzai, MD.
Rulon Hardman, MD. Mentor: Ryan O'Hara, MD
Bugra Oktay, PhD. Mentor: Frederic Noo, PhD
Joyce Schroeder, MD. Mentor: Satoshi Minoshima, MD, PhD.
Class participants rated the class very highly, and the overall scoring shows that it was perceived as an excellent experience. The Department plans to offer this class again in the near future.
